In June 2020, after over one month since the beginning of the lockdown that forced millions of italians to stay at home in order to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus, more and more questions are arising about when and how we will be allowed to enjoy our free time in our cities, and to travel. As summer was approaching, it was becoming clear that we would have needed to find another way to experience traveling. Or maybe even to accept to give up to it. 2020’s tourist season did, in fact, just disappear.
In 2019, the biggest concern for destinations like Venice or Barcelona was the potential negative impact of an excessive and unregulated tourist inflow, and how it could destabilize the cities themselves. In 2020, the tourist sector, contributing over 12% to the Italian GDP, resulted being one of the most affected sectors from the outbreak of Coronavirus Covid-19. Edited during the pandemic, this work was meant to offer a nostalgic look at our relationship with traveling as a life experience, which, by changing, reflected our own change.
The featured pictures are part of a broader work realized in 2018 and 2019 between Venice, Roma, Naples and Barcelona for Tripadvisor and Viator.
