On the 12th of November 2019, record 187 cm high tide hit Venice. It has been recorded as Venice’s worst flooding in 50 years. Its cultural and historical heritage has been damaged, including the historical archives of 19th century books from the Fondazione Querini Stampalia and classical music sheets from the Conservatory of Music Benedetto Marcello.
Volunteers have been given instructions on how to manage the damaged paper, that needs immediate treatment in order to stop the deterioration caused by water. Books will be deepfrozen before being restored.
